The admission form provides us with information that we can use to verify your student status at the university and get further information about your specific issue. SLS cannot offer same-day consultations, nor can it provide legal advice by phone or email. Student Legal Services is an on-campus law firm that provides a secure and confidential space for all UW-Seattle and Bothell students who have legal questions or concerns. Specifically, SLS can assist students in areas such as immigration, landlord/tenant, name and gender tag changes, contracts, discrimination, obtaining a protection order, speeding tickets, criminal matters, and other legal matters. As Executive Director of Community Development and Inclusion at the University of Washington, Marisa Herrera oversees a student-style institution and leads a unit that develops campus diversity programs in leadership, social justice education, student leadership consulting, and campus-wide diversity programs that welcome new students and include cultural degrees. The Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center is the largest cultural center on a college campus in the country, providing direct service to 5,000 underrepresented minority (URM), first-generation, low-income, and Black students.
Marisa received her Ph.D. in Education from the University of Southern California in Higher Education Administration and held various positions in student services, diversity, and admissions at Stanford University, UCLA, and NAU before joining UW. In addition to her role as Executive Director, she is also a lecturer at the College of Education. Marisa has served on several national advisory boards, including the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education, the Association of Black Centers as President of Washington State, the College Board Native American Student Advocacy Institute, the Washington State Coalition for Undocumented Students, Girl Scouts, the Center for Inclusive Entrepreneurship and is Secretary of the Board of Directors of Casa Latina. In 2017, she received the inaugural Evans School of Public Policy Award for outstanding employee contributions to diversity, the POC Voices and Visions Award, presented by the Evans Students of Color Coalition. She was also honored with the NW Asian Weekly News` Women of Color Empowered Awards “Rising Star Award” in 2015. The lawyer referral program makes referrals for people who want to hire a lawyer. They do not make recommendations for clients who need free legal services. The Office of the Ombudsman serves the UW community by providing high-quality, client-focused services for conflict prevention, management, navigation and resolution at the UW. They act as thought partners with clients to help them deal with any issues related to their lives at UW. Dr. Laura Emiko Soltis will share her experience as a teacher at Freedom University, an underground school of freedom for undocumented students in Georgia. She will discuss the rise of anti-immigrant politics in the Deep South from a racial and economic justice perspective, and describe how Freedom University has resisted such policies using a liberating educational model and human rights framework in the classroom, as well as a multi-layered strategy of building intersectional coalitions. of direct action and federal legal challenges in the public sphere.
